Things to Do in Cebu
Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Cebu, Philippines, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.
Right, Cebu. Where the Philippines' colonial story really begins, a cross planted centuries ago still standing to prove it, the country's oldest city and a proper gateway to some of its best diving and island-hopping. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Cebu: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the ethical second thought. Six main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.
Magellan's Cross
Cebu is home to a wooden cross said to have been planted by European explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, his arrival marked the beginning of centuries of Spanish colonial presence in the Philippines, and the cross, now housed in a small chapel-like structure near the city centre, remains one of the country's most historically significant sites. The original wooden cross is reportedly encased within the visible one, preserved to prevent relic hunters from splintering pieces off over the centuries.
It's a compact, quick visit, worth combining with Basilica del Santo Nino nearby, one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the country, both essential stops for understanding how deeply this single moment shaped the nation's subsequent history.
Hours Daily, roughly 8am–6pm

Cebu's Colonial Old City
Cebu is regarded as the oldest city in the Philippines, founded by Spanish colonisers in the 16th century, one of the earliest Spanish settlements in Asia, predating Manila as the colonial capital, and that early founding is still clearly visible in the old city's layout and surviving colonial architecture. Fort San Pedro, a small triangular Spanish fortress near the waterfront, is the oldest and smallest fort in the country, worth the modest entry fee for the history and the pleasant grounds inside.
The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House, one of the oldest residential structures in the country, gives a real sense of what colonial-era domestic life looked like, worth combining into a proper old-city walking route with the cross and the fort.

Whale Shark Encounters at Oslob
Cebu is a popular gateway for diving trips to see whale sharks, large filter-feeding marine animals, nearby Oslob has become a well-known, if debated, spot for encountering these gentle giants. The debate is real and worth understanding before you book, Oslob's whale shark tourism involves feeding the animals to keep them nearby, a practice marine biologists and conservation groups have raised real concerns about, altered feeding behaviour and increased boat traffic stress on the sharks among them.
Donsol, in a different part of the Philippines, offers a more naturally regulated whale shark encounter without feeding, worth researching as an alternative if the ethics of the Oslob model concern you, this is a case where doing a bit of homework before booking matters.
Getting there About 3 hours from Cebu City
Best time Morning, when whale shark activity is most reliable
Temple of Leah
A grand, Roman-inspired temple built on a hillside overlooking Cebu City, constructed as a striking monument to lasting love, and now a popular photo stop and viewpoint regardless of the backstory. The architecture is deliberately imposing, columns, arches, and sweeping staircases, a bit incongruous with the surrounding landscape but properly photogenic for exactly that reason.
It's a good sunset spot, sweeping views over Cebu City and the surrounding hills as the light fades.
Hours Daily, roughly 8am–10pm
Best time Sunset
Getting there A short drive from central Cebu City
Cebu Lechon
Cebu's version of lechon (whole roasted pig) has a strong national reputation, often cited as the best in the country, crackling skin and a distinctive stuffing of lemongrass and other aromatics setting it apart from other regional versions. Several dedicated lechon restaurants around the city serve it by the portion, a proper local specialty worth trying at least once.
It's properly rich, a small portion goes further than you'd expect, worth ordering to share alongside other local dishes rather than as a full solo meal.
Best time Lunch or dinner
Island-Hopping Day Trips
Cebu serves as a properly convenient base for island-hopping trips to nearby smaller islands, Nalusuan and other reef-fringed spots offer good snorkelling within a short boat ride, a good, more relaxed alternative to the ethically fraught Oslob whale shark trips if you'd rather keep things simpler.
Day trips typically combine two or three stops with lunch included, an easy, well-organised way to spend a full day on the water without much planning required.
Best time Year-round, though December through May offers the calmest seas
Best time to visit Cebu
December through May is the dry season and the most comfortable window, less rain and generally calmer seas for island-hopping and diving trips.
The wet season (roughly June through November) brings heavier rain and a real risk of typhoons, worth checking forecasts closely if travelling during these months.
Getting around Cebu
Jeepneys, colourful shared local vehicles, are the classic, cheap way to get around Cebu City, though the routes take some getting used to. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easier option for visitors, and for day trips to Oslob or island-hopping departure points, arranging transport through your accommodation or a tour operator is the practical choice.
