Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Maputo, Mozambique, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Right, Maputo. Portuguese-tiled facades, prawns considered practically a civic duty to eat while you're here, a genuinely elegant coastal capital that renamed itself after independence and has since built a real reputation as one of Southern Africa's best food cities. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Maputo: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the meal. Four main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.

01 / Portuguese-tiled buildings and wide tree-lined avenues

Maputo's Portuguese Colonial Architecture

Maputo's architecture reflects a long period of colonial rule by Portugal, Portuguese-tiled buildings and wide tree-lined avenues shape much of the older parts of the city, a genuinely elegant urban layout, Avenida Julius Nyerere and the surrounding streets hold some of the best-preserved examples, jacaranda trees lining wide boulevards in a style that clearly echoes Lisbon.

The Maputo Railway Station, designed with input attributed in part to Gustave Eiffel's engineering firm, is genuinely one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, a striking green-domed structure worth seeing even if you're not catching a train.

Costa do Sol, a long-established restaurant right on the beach, is genuinely one of the classic places to try this properly, worth the trip for both the food and the setting, particularly at sunset.

03 / Renamed after Mozambican independence in 1975

From Lourenco Marques to Maputo

Maputo was known by a different name for much of the colonial era, Lourenco Marques, renamed after Mozambican independence in 1975 to reflect its own national identity, a genuinely significant piece of the country's post-colonial history, worth understanding this transition, the name change reflected a broader, deliberate move to reclaim Mozambican identity following independence from Portugal after a long liberation struggle.

The Museum of the Revolution and various sites around the city cover this history, worth a visit for context on Mozambique's path to independence and the years since.

Price Museum entry typically a small fee, under $5 USD equivalent
04 / A genuinely good local market experience

Mercado Central

Maputo's central market, a genuinely lively covered market, fresh produce, spices, and crafts, housed in a striking colonial-era building, worth a wander for both the goods on offer and the architecture itself.

It's a good, unhurried browse, worth combining with a wider walk through the surrounding downtown streets given how central it sits within the older colonial part of the city.
